Meet the people who keep us Smart
Dee went on to a long career in broadcast journalism, striving to learn about her community and pass the information on using compelling visual images. Ms. Dixon participated in the news coverage of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens, the rise and fall of Rashneeshpuram along with countless school board meetings and political races. When the hustle and bustle of the newsroom lost its luster, Deefollowed her heart to the garden and was able to build a new career combining her love of gardening with her knowledge and experience in television production by joining the staff of Smart Gardening as a freelance writer/producer. She also wrote and produced a 30-minute television program shown on the Research Channel showcasing the dedicated search for further understanding of our planet going on at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center. Working for the Oregon Department of Education, she recently traveled the state visiting six schools recognized for closing the achievement gap between high and low achieving students and produced videos to tell their stories.
Dee considers each of her three children miracles too. James is a district manager for Glaxo-SmithKline living with his family near Seattle. John, a PhD candidate in education, is a principal in the Folsom Unified School District near Sacramento, California and Melanie is a senior at theUniversity of St. Thomas, Houston. She will consider it a great blessing if they all come to their senses and come home where they belong. She now dips the thumbs of four grandchildren and shares the miracle of living and loving with Colm Lenaghan, her boyfriend of twenty-five years!
